Time To Trooper Up !
There comes a time in every season when any team
worth it's salt has to step up to the plate and perform. It's
about that time of the season for many teams playing
ball in the northeast. Last week's unusual October snow
storm shut down a good number of games in New Jersey
while at the same time having no effect on New York City
games whatsoever. One of those Garden State games
which was thrown into a tail spin was the match up
between The Teaneck Highwaymen and Ridgewood's
Maroons. There's always a loud thud when these two
teams clash on the gridiron and this is especially true
when a playoff berth is at stake between the two rivals.
So after a few readjustments the game was held during
the week. There are years when Teaneck dominates
these battles and times when Ridgewood holds the
upper hand, this year the better team proved to be
Ridgewood who played solid football from beginning to
end. Game shots have been posted

There comes a time in the season for many teams when it becomes
apparent that they won't be going to the big show. It's at that point that a
bit of gut checking takes place for individual players and teams as they
have to decide if they have the pride and resilience to finish the season
out. One of the amazing things about this game is that truly great ball
clubs have fallen by the wayside and not advanced as hoped to the next
level. There may have once been every indication that some of these
teams would play deep into the post season. Maybe the bounce of a
ball, an extra point kick or an off day was all that stood in their way and
caused the early end of a season.
Consolation games are a last opportunity for teams to play for pride.
That was the back story when we coveret the recent game between
Eastside and J.P. Stevens . We'd covered the tough Eastside
freshmen squad earlier this season and this time we got a chance to
see their varsity counterparts at work.

Warren County is a place where horse farms still exist and
football games are played in the middle of green rolling
hillsides. It's also a place where herds of dear literally stand
at the roadside like little children waiting for the best time to
cross. All of this fresh air grows bumper crops of rugged
football players. Our last foray down to Warren county to
cover Belvidere's championship run was in 2008. This
time around covered the JV level to get an eyeball on next
year's crop of lettermen. The Warren Regional Patriots
hosted the Jr Seaters in this season ending match up. While
the visiting Belvidere team presented a strong hand from the
first whistle, The Pats made the kind of adjustments which
kept them in the hunt for the win. In the end The Seaters
went home with the win as both teams look forward to next
season.

Fighting The Odds
Monday fall afternoons in northern New Jersey are reserved
exclusively for Junior Varsity games. At times they have been
some of the best games not seen by fans. It can simply be a time
when football gets played in it's purest form. With the JV season
winding down teams are getting the most out of whatever pigskin
they have left.
On Monday we visited Tenafly as they hosted the De Paul
Spartan. Though we've never covered the tigers before we have
seen the Spartans in action in the past.
Sometimes an opponent is simply more than a team can handle and that proved to be the case for the Tigers on this day. Nevertheless, it
was some gut checking going on and in spite of the odds, some valiant efforts were displayed on the gridiron.

ONE MORE GAME
Heading Out To Mounty Country
We Headed out to Mounty country to cover their match up against Livingston. Montclair,
a team with a long history of championships in New Jersey is a ravenous squad of ball
hawks who know how stay in the thick of things as seen by their Giants Stadium
appearance last year . With their 7 - 0 record they're looking to be wear the crown
when the last whistle is blown at Giants stadium at the end of the season.
Montclair banged pads against Livingston who is also vying for a slot in the playoffs.
The Lancers are also familiar with the pay dirt of a champion- ship appearance as
seen by their 2008 Giants Stadium win . They've held the holy grail of football and
they want to hold it again!
On this particular day though Montclair had more than Livingston could handle and won
the game in convincing fashion.

If you heard a loud explosion this weekend in northern New Jersey it wasn't a repeat of the earthquake which happened right
at the start of the season in North Jersey but it was just as eventful and brought a seismic end to an explosive season! The
Don Bosco vs Bergen Catholic game was one of those must see games for so many reasons but so was the Wayne Hills /Old
Tappan match. Fans and supporters sure got their money's worth in the other contests which brought along with them a few
exciting endings. Congrats to all title winners !

If you're hankering for a taste of
some great football,old friends and
good food you can't go too wrong
by checking the annual Soul Bowl,
a classic event which takes place
between Weequahic high school
and Malcolm X Shabazz. The game
comes complete with dueling
marching bands who make their
presence felt long before the first
whistle is blown. As far as the
bands are concerned, half time.......
